Downsview Locksmith FAQ

Downsview Locksmith FAQ

Here at Downsview Locksmith we try to answer all your questions so these are some of the common questions people ask:

Q. Find locking my door difficult and a great amount of force needs to be applied when I am locking it or unlocking it, why does this happen? It used to work fine before.

A. As you know wood usually expands when the weather is humid and contract when it is dry, hence the lock latch and the strike plate become out of alignment and they need to be adjusted in order for the door to work properly.

Q. I find turning my key difficult, should I just force the key in until it turns?

A. No! If you force the key to turn then it might get stuck and break inside the lock and in times like these your lock needs to be re-keyed with the right pin height in order to match the key you’re using.

Q. My key stopped working, how and why did this happen?

A. The lock could either be seized of dried and it needs lubrication either the key or the lock. Also a code cut could also be required or the cylinder has to be re-keyed to the factory cylinder.

Q. Can I use graphite of WD in my lock?

A. Do not use this, since the moving parts could be inhabit and it attracts dirt which caused the lock fail. Graphite should be used in residential and commercial type locks and instead of a WD-40 use Teflon or silicon based lubricant like Tri-flo.

Q. At times I need to jiggle the key in order for the lock to work, what do I do?

A. If this happens then it usually means that the key or the lock is worn out and you have to make a code cut key. If this doesn’t help then the cylinder has to be re-keyed to factory reset.

Q. I want all the locks in my house to have the same key, can this happen?

A. Yes! If there is a key which slides into all the locks then the lock can be re-keyed alike. If there’s a lock which cannot get slide into then you would need a brand new lock.

Q. Someone has stolen my key and I have to change my locks now, which means do I buy all new locks?

A. No! Your locks can be re-keyed by changing the combinations to this new code rather than replacing them.

Q. Can you give me a lock which works with my existing key?

A. Yes we can!

Q. What is a master key?

A. This is a secondary key which opens a group of locks and sometimes all the locks.

Q. What is the difference between master key and re-keying?

A. Re-keying usually changes the combination of the locks by changing the pins which match the new key, whereas master key is allowing multiple keys to operate a lock.

Q. What is a restricted key system?

A. It restricts getting a key duplicated and only the authorized account holder can have duplicates made or update the current system.

Downsview Locksmith helps to answer all these questions and makes sure that no customers remain confused.
